In truth Hillenberg served many jobs on Rocko and formed friendships with writers and voice talent, all of which would carry over into the production of SpongeBob and one of the greatest cartoons of all time. The internet seems to think Hillenberg only started work on the series then, despite his credits as director and additional writer for last week’s “Sucker for the Suck-O-Matic”, credits that foreshadow the greatness to come. Stephen Hillenberg created SpongeBob (and was a legit marine biologist at one point) but was also a key figure in producing Rocko’s Modern Life, especially in the final two seasons as Joe Murray started to lessen his production responsibilities. You know, one of the most popular cartoons of the last 15 years? Joe Murray, Rocko’s creator, also created Camp Lazlo with many former Rocko alumni but probably the biggest thing to come out of the Rocko staff would be SpongeBob SquarePants.
